MAQ 2011 Lottery Block – the Split Nine-Patch

This extremely versatile block can be used in a surprising number of settings. The strong diagonal through the center of the block allows you to create movement within your quilt. The shading is dramatic and effective in making secondary designs appear. As this block is similar to a log cabin block, it can be used in many of the traditional log cabin settings. But, we think the Split Nine-Patch is so much simpler to make!

This year’s lottery block uses 3 groups of fabrics:

  • black/white prints (black background with white design) or tone-on-tone blacks or solid blacks that “read” black for the darks

  • white/black prints (white background with black design) or tone-on-tone or solid whites that “read” white for the lights

  • bright contrasting fabric that reads solid blue (teal/aqua/royal blue) for the center.

We love the scrappy look of using different fabrics so it is best to use 4 different dark fabrics and 4 different light fabrics. But you may repeat fabrics within the block, too.

This is a finished 9" block.
