Color 101 - Color Wheel Basics
Style: Design
Instructor: Lauren Kingsland
Method: No sewing
Saturday morning
Skill Level: Beginner
This class is an exploration of the basic principles of
using color in quilts. Exercises are done in fused fabric which will become
pages in the student’s own color notebook. The color wheel shows
how colors are related to one another and gives us a vocabulary to describe
color combinations. We will talk about analogous and complimentary color
schemes and how to use them to create quilts that “work”.
While aimed at beginning quilters, this course is useful to anyone who
wants to take her quilting color selections to a more deliberate level.

Color 201 - Color Family Values
Style: Design
Instructor: Lauren Kingsland
Method: No sewing
Saturday afternoon
Skill Level: Beginner
This class looks at how the properties of light and dark
influence a successful color scheme. Exercises are done in fused fabric
which will become pages in the student’s own color notebook. Where
the color wheel shows how colors are related to one another, value contrast
is what cretes drama and the overal design. Analogous and complimentary
color schemes introduced in “Color 101” will be pushed to
create different effects by varying the value. Aimed at advanced beginners,
this course is usful to anyone who has struggled with a blah set of colors.

H05 Hired
Man 4-Patch Lightning Quilt
Style: Traditional
pieced
Instructor: Karen Fiedler
Method: Machine
Saturday all day
Skill level: Beginner
The hired man often slept on a cot in the hall or in the kitchen, so quilts
made for him were narrow and long. Today they are great for lounging on
the sofa or keeping your side of the bed a little warmer. The 4-Patch
Lightning Quilt was adapted from a design in the Country Threads book
Quilts from Aunt Amy.
The Hired Man 4-Patch Lightning is a great quilt to showcase fabric collections
since the pieces are large. The approximately 6-inch by 10-inch finished-size
triangle is great for those fabrics you almost can’t bear to cut
into. Flannel works well, also. Techniques used in the construction of
the block, which goes together very quickly, include partial seams, sewing
long bias seams, and learning how to square up the blocks to the same
size prior to sewing the top together. The finished size of the quilt
is an elongated rectangle, 53 inches x 86 inches, but the pattern adapts
well to other sizes. Keep going until you like what you see! |

I01
English Floral Sampler
Style: Traditional
pieced and Appliqué
Instructor: Elizabeth Carlson
Method: Machine and hand
Saturday, Sunday all day
Skill Level: Intermediate
In seventeenth century England, young girls practiced their needlework
skills by embroidering "band samplers", long, narrow panels
featuring horizontal rows of floral and geometric motifs. In this class
students will learn how to create a charming 12" x 24" pieced,
appliquéd and quilted band sampler using precision machine piecing
and small scale appliqué techniques. Many tips will be given for
cutting, strip-piecing and pressing small-scale pieces very precisely.
Appliqué methods covered will include template-free appliqué
(sometimes known as back basting) and freezer paper and glue stick appliqué.
While class emphasis will be on hand appliqué, the freezer paper
and glue stick method can be used for machine appliqué if the student
prefers. The two day class format will allow lots of time to get comfortable
with new skills and techniques. We will piece in the mornings and relax
with appliqué in the afternoons. Skill level – students should
have experience with rotary cutting, machine piecing and some appliqué
experience. “English Floral Sampler” pattern or Strawberry
Fair book purchased in advance or in class. See www.elizabethquilts.com |

Landscape Quilts from Photos FULL
Style: pieced landscape
Instructor: Susan Grancio

a variety of fabrics before sewing. Choose to design and piece a quilt
that is very detailed and realistic or more abstract, depending on the
way you create your shapes and select fabrics. The designs will yield
wall quilts of various sizes; difficulty will be influenced by the amount

Blocks and More
Style: Traditional
pieced
Instructor: Barbara Lenox
Method: Machine
Saturday, Sunday all day
Skill Level: Confident Beginner
Learn a no-template, no marking way to make this graphic favorite. The
diamond angle is 60 degrees so there will be set-in seams but Barbara’s
variation of Y-seaming eliminates aggravation. The first hexagon will
be pieced in the basic Tumbling Blocks formation. The second will be the
Pennsylvania Hex variation. At this point you may choose either pattern
or move on to a design that combines the two. Two techniques of joining
the hexagons to make the top will be explored. Barbara’s technique
for machine piecing Tumbling Blocks was published in the April 2007 issue
of Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine. |
